Congratulations on the great piece in today’s Irish Times. At the Native Irish Honey Bee Society (NIHBS), we aim to conserve the native Irish bee, Apis mellifera mellifera. The native bee has adapted to the Irish climate over thousands of years, it gives a good crop of honey even in mediocre summers, flies out on cold, damp days, forages longer in the season on heather and ivy flowers, and is slower than exotic strains of bee to gobble its honey stores in bad weather. It can also be very gentle, allowing manipulation without protective clothing, indeed a very honey of a bee.
NIHBS has funded research with NUIG and LIT and preliminary results will be made available at NIHBS annual conference in Athlone Springs Hotel on Fri/Sat 10/11 Feb, 2017. Further details available on our website: http://nihbs.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/honeybee-AD.pdf
Greetings Native Irish Honey Bee Society and thank you for your message! We at Bí are committed to our native honeybee, the Apis Mellifera Mellifera, a courageous little bee with rare talents, including the ability to forage in the rain! Our educational Apiary in Broadstone Park is devoted exclusively to the native Irish ‘Black’ Bee. Last year we rehoused a swarm from a colony of wild apis mellifera mellifera who are particularly robust. We hope to produce new queens from this colony to strengthen our gene pool. Please let us know if we can assist in your research which we will follow with interest!

I read in the Times last January that you were going to host a workshop that was being lead by Professor Tom Seeley in April or May. Is that going ahead in May? If it is, I would love to book a place on it please.

Many thanks for your interest in our collaboration with Thomas Seeley. I think I have already responded to you Lisa, but just in case I haven’t, unfortunately Thomas Seeley was unable to join us this year due to having to focus on completion of his latest book project. He does plan on joining us next year in May. As soon as we have something confirmed we will be announcing it on our various social channels.
